Tips for parents to support their child’s mental health

People who call, text, or chat with 988 – the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – will be directed to a local 988 call center based on a caller’s area code where trained professionals are waiting to listen and assist.

An estimated 15.1% of U.S. children have experienced a major depression episode. Though signs and symptoms of mental health issues can be difficult to identify, know how to recognize warning signs so you’re equipped to help your child when they may need it most:

• Sadness that last two weeks or more

• Withdrawing from or avoiding social interactions

• Out-of-control behavior that can be harmful

As a parent you want to take care of your child physically and mentally. But when you feel that something may be off, do not ignore the signs – calling 988 will connect you with critical support.
